Honolulu already had a shortage of police officers and with more officers leaving for better pay on the mainland, Honolulu police officers had to put in overtime to make up the difference. But Jeremy refused to pay for the overtime claiming that the city just didn't have the money. Then, when about one hundred officers showed up at city hall with a law suit demanding to be paid, Jeremy miraculously found $1.8 million to pay for the overtime. When asked to comment on the situation, police union president Bennie Atkinson was quoted as saying, "This is the same old B-S from the mayor." Honolulu Weekly cartoon 4-29-1998
