Richard, "Dickie" Wong served as chairman of the Bishop Estate board of trustees until removed temporarily by Probate Judge Kevin Chang on May 7, 1999. Although Wong had stated publicly that he would not step down, on December 6, he offered his resignation to the $ 1-million-a-year trustee post. He faced state and IRS legal actions stemming from allegations of mismanagement of the estate and for taking excessive compensation. Wong, a democrat was president of the Hawaii State Senate from 1979 to 1992.
